Indies do get random events in Dom3 .. eg. they can get labs and temples and reinforcements by barbarian or knight attacks .. or Bogus, sometimes 
But ONE random event cannot cause dominion spread for 5 turns or more ...

As for AI the most effective work around to this problem so far is to simply use an American instead, they tend to put up a bit more of a fight than your average Artificial Idiot.
