I'm playing with a T-28 for the first time. Its main gun is a 76.2mm which has both HE and AP ammo. But the T-28 is firing HE at everything including tanks. What do I have to do to get it to fire AP?

At long range the HE of this gun has a better penetration than AP so it will fire HE at tanks.

So, in answer to your question - get closer.

Have a look at the AP calculator (WW2_APCalc.exe) to get an idea where the switchover will occur.

IF you are close, I have no idea - there is no way I know of to force a certain ammo selection.

It will switch over to AP when get much closer (850m or closer iirc)
That's what the game does for you so you will not waste valuable AP rounds if have no chance of pen:)

Wow! Was it already in old original SP game? I'm impressed about this autoswitch!

Nothing has changed in this since 1995 or whenever SP1 first came out.

If AP is marginal or useless, then HE will be fired in preference to it on armoured targets.
