Issue with drivers IMHO...
There's no reason for the working D2 demo to decide not to work anymore, it has no expiration date ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

My OS is Windows ME
My specs as best as I can figure (not massivley au fait with PC stuff)
1GHZ processor
128 Ram
Graphics card....not sure. I can run most FPS from about two years ago (I dont remember what its make is tho)

Everything is else is working more or less. No obvious problems. Sound is on the fritz, could that be it?

Yes it could. Doms 2 might have a command-line switch to disable sound, which if this is the problem, could be a work-around...

Im sorry if this has already been covered but I thought Id just go straight to the horses mouth so to speak...

I downloaded and installed the D2 demo. I had a whale of a time and really enjoyed myself playing it for a couple of days. Then yesterday when I clikced on the icon, the game loaded but froze on the opening menu screen. I've uninstalled and reinstalled including deleting my save games and it always happens

Does anyone have any ideas?

What OS are you running?
What are the machine specs (e.g. CPU doesn't matter, graphics card does)?
Did you test other programms, if there's a problem as well?
What did you prior to your machine acting up with DOM?
etc. etc. ...
