SPWW2 Sound Mod – Cross Sounds 1.1 - Released Feb 2009

EDIT: For the latest version Cross Sounds 1.2 - released in Nov 2011 - see this thread:

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showt...230#post788230

Released Nov 2008

Cross Sounds 1.0 is the sixth release of this sound mod.

The original Cross Sounds 0.5 replaced 50% of the game’s sounds.
Cross Sounds 1.0 replaces 96%, or 146 of the original 152 sounds.

I consider this mod complete, though I hope to tweak it - and improve it - in the future.

The Cross Sounds 0.9 to 1.0 update includes:
• New tank movement sounds
• New halftrack/light tank sound
• New wheeled vehicle sound
• New 30mm Gatling sound (used by the A10 Warthog)
• New MP38/40 SMG sound
• Over a dozen new Machine Gun sounds
• Looked at volume on all sounds and adjusted some

• Updated Excel Sound Guide

You can read more about it and find download links here:

http://www.theblitz.org/message_boar....php?tid=48897

This sound mod is also fully compatible with MBT, as long as your MBT install uses the default WAV sounds not MP3.

This mod only changes the wav files (actual sounds), so can be installed mid-battle with no PBEM, security or OOB problems.

However, this mod is not endorsed or supported by Shrapnel Games or The Camo Workshop. Here's their advisory on mods:

"This mod contains highly altered or additional files that may or will cause interference with the master game files and it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that this mod be installed and played ONLY in a separate copy of the game and NOT run from the master game"

Cheers,
Cross

This is a really good mod and is worth checking out if you haven't done so.

I've released Cross Sounds 1.1, which is a small update (less than 7MB zip file).

It upgrades 25 sounds, mostly MGs.

Thanks to Panzer Bob, Blitzkrieg and Treadhead for helping me out with the MG-34 and MG-42. And to John Hale for kicking me up the backside to get it done. :D

You can get more info. and a download link here:

I say, can any kind soul e-mail me the relevant 1.0 to 1.1 file?

I've downloaded it 3 times now, but my ancient version of WinZip refuses to recognise it.

Hi John,

I just uploaded a 'Cross Sounds 1.0 to 1.1' Rar file, so if you have Rar, you could try that.

I recommend WinRar 3.8, it's free, and it opens zip files without any problems.

Re: SPWW2 Sound Mod – Cross Sounds 1.1 - Released Feb 2009

There are 3 ricochet sounds in WinSP:

22.wav
81.wav
82.wav

Changing a Sound

1. Identify the sound in the WinSP ‘SOUNDS’ folder that you want to change. You can use the Cross Sounds Excel Sound Guide to help you find the right sound.

Example: You want to change the main tank sound which is 33.wav
Just double click on 33.wav (in the Sounds folder) and your Windows Media Player should play the sound, to confirm it’s the one you want to change.

Tank movement sounds:
32.wav
220.wav
249.wav

2. Rename the sound. This is just to save it, in case you want to change back at some point. ‘Right Click’ on the file then ‘Rename’, which will highlight the file with a blinking cursor, then type the new name and hit ‘Enter’.

Example: Rename 33.wav to something like 33cs.wav

3. Find and copy the new sound you want to use.

Example: Say you want to use sound 220.wav as the new tank movement sound. Highlight the 220.wav file, then ‘Right Click’ then ‘Copy’.

4. Go to Desktop, then ‘Right Click’ and ‘Paste’.

Example: File 220.wav should now appear on your ‘Desktop’.

5. Rename the new file on your ‘desktop’ to the sound you identified in step 1.

Example: Rename 220.wav to 33.wav

6. Move the new file from your desktop to the Sounds folder.

Example: Right Click on the 33.wav file on your desktop, then ‘Cut’ (by cutting instead of copying, you will remove the file from your desktop) then go into the WinSP ‘Sounds’ folder and ‘Right Click’ and ‘Paste’. Windows should NOT ask you if you want to replace the 33.wav because you already renamed the original file.

You’re done.

Now, in your Sounds folder – when sorted by name – you should have 33.wav and 33cs.wav right next to each other.
The game will only use the file named 33.wav. So if you want to go back, just rename the 33.wav to 33b.wav then rename the 33cs.wav to 33.wav and you’re back to the Cross Sounds sound.

Hope this helps.

Cross

Re: SPWW2 Sound Mod – Cross Sounds 1.1 - Released Feb 2009

Or, you could just drop your new sound into the sounds folder, and simply change the sounds.ini file to point to the new sound.

1) copy sounds.ini to say sounds.ini/back (in case you want to recover it later)

Open sounds.ini with a text editor (not a word processor!)

2) change

sound033="33.WAV"

to

sound033="fred.WAV"

3) save file and exit.

The whole point of having the sounds mapped in an ini file is so that folks can remap if required, without messing with the original files themselves.

Cheers
Andy
