The new icons can be a bit hard to understand. I would have liked to have seen them at the top of the screen as they were in SEIV. A few mock up UI screens were made with them at the top and they looked *****'n. Perhaps we could post a few of th images. I don't know if the NDA would apply since it was a suggestion and not really beta related and since the game is now out any suggestions can now be made.
The image included in this post was one of the suggestions I thought would make the game more functional. Notice there are a lot of ideas in the image from tabs to a better visual lay out that provides imformation where you need it. If I could mod the game, I would make this my UI main screen. |
Re: frustration with se5
If he would have made the tabs into actual tabs, instead of hiding as buttons, it would have been infinitely better...

Re: frustration with se5
I think I'd prefer smaller fleet/ship/planet icon stuff in the hex-view, though. Alot of scrolling with only 4 of them showing at once. Other than that, such UI changes would be a great improvement.

Re: frustration with se5
There is an option in Empire Options to make them smaller, but they are still damned huge. SJ made a new set of smaller icons, IIRC.

Re: frustration with se5
If he had made the interface moddable, that would've been even more *****in'.
|
Re: frustration with se5
It is, partially. There's settings to move some of the interface elments around, but they don't work fully. And all the pictures that make up the interface are moddable.

EDIT: AT I looked at your attachment just now, I really like the look of it. I'd really like those buttons to be customizable. I.e. I can put those buttons in the drop down menus of my choice. And I can make a button on my own to organize the buttons shown on your picture - I'm not just limited to organizing the buttons into a hardcoded top level. |
Re: frustration with se5
Hmm, well, if Aaron can somehow pull off making it moddable enough to at least somewhat emulate SE4 and get more of the buttons on the screen at once, that would be pretty aweseome. What was so wrong with having all the buttons up top anyway? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Re: frustration with se5
Buttonfest? Well, I suppose there are a lot of buttons, but it only amounted to two rows. I never felt overwhelmed by their number.
I think we agree though that the system in SE5 stinks, especially after having everything at your fingertips in SE4. |
Re: frustration with se5
It wasn't, at least for me initially. (play SE4 at 800x600 some time..). SE5 avoids that pitfall but adds a couple new ones.
I wouldn't mind the button grouping so much if some of the more common commands weren't buried. |
Re: frustration with se5
Has anybody made an SE4-ized version of the hotkeys?
All of the most common ones feel like they've been randomized in SE5. |
Re: frustration with se5
SJ do you mean a se4-ized version of the *buttons* or hotkeys? AT made an se4-ized version of the buttons several posts back in this very thread (look for the attachment)

I haven't checked too deeply, but I don't notice any common ones that differ much at all from SE4. You did use the reset keys feature, right? They were randomized many beta versions ago, but Aaron made them sensible again (much like SE4's hotkeys). |

Re: frustration with se5
Probably should have just PMed... the default hotkeys in demo and retail SE5 should be the more sensible ones. You can configure them in Menu > Controls. There is a "default" button to reset them.
Though, drop/load cargo are pretty weird, and what's with that redundant "transfer units" order poaching the "l" hotkey? |
