The New Game: The Revenge

Welp, that Last game went over pretty well. So I'm thinking of starting another game. As always, something along the neighborhood of 4-5 hours a day, to run on a fairly consistent schedule, barring intermittent emergencies for somebody, to the death!

Who's in? Navrunner? Condors? Want some revenge? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: The New Game: The Revenge

I may be up for a game sometime in the near future to test my skills and see how they work in a MP game. It would be a good test as you seem to be quite a formidable player, Norfleet.

However, it will have to wait a few weeks at least until I can get 4-5 hours at a time to commit to play. Even then, I would only be available from 5pm-10pm Eastern on weekdays and most anytime during the morning and afternoon on the weekends.

One question I do have is about how long does it take for each turn normally? I know it must vary widely depending on how far into the game and other factors, but what is it by average? I am just curious as to the pace and whether I would be able to plan/think fast enough to keep up http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif .

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">How long....well, an early game turn, is primarily bounded by others. I've seen people take up to 5 minutes on turn 2, which I think is rather unusually long, given that turn 2 takes *ME* about 15 seconds. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

As a good rule of thumb, turn N will take (N+5)/2 minutes to complete, on average.

What side do you want to call this time? Me? I'm Ermor again. Maybe I'll take Soul Gate for a spin, though.

Mostly, I just called it that because "The Revenge" sounds cool. I already have a game running called "The New Game: Ultimate Death", so I figured "The New Game: The Revenge" would sound nice.

I don't get it though. Can you give me some info on how this is going to work? I don't want to do PBEM. and it looks like this is a network game, so how is this going to work?

It looks like we will take turns when we are all Online like a blitz.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Good, because I hate PBEM. I don't even have email.

And yes, it's a network game. It works exactly like a blitz. We may even PLAY it as a Marathon-blitz, if nobody has any impinging time issues.

Basically, we start the game at the appointed time, and we play until somebody has to go. Then we pick up again the next day. And so on, until only one man remains standing. And be warned that I fight to the bitter end. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">If this happened, about half of the undead each time would be turned to a different side so eventually, you'd have a battlefield of undead that looked like a giant free for all.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Actually, I think it would take all of about 1, maybe 2, castings to turn the battle into a giant, roiling, free-for-all melee, since the undead converted would essentially be random, and the entire mess would instantly devolve into a huge mass as the mob turns on each other. I've seen it happen. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Well, if you insist. It's more of an ingrained habit than anything else, as I've always had a firm distrust of random events from other games, and even on "rare", there's an awful lot of them: I've always felt the game played faster and focussed more on the actual strategery if every turn didn't drag out into an extended nuclear waste disposal program or turn into an extended crapshoot of who got hosed by a random event today. Besides, most of them are beneficial to me anyway, as I'm Turmoil and Luck. I don't even mind the population killers. Losing 1/4th of my 0 population doesn't really bother me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

It should be noted that playing on a large map already greatly increases the probability of random events greatly. Even on rare, I rarely go turns without 2 or 3 randoms.

Re: The New Game: The Revenge

normally, I'd be against rare randoms, but Norfleet makes some good points - given the size of the map, and also helping to lessen the chance of completely messing up a game start.

However, I just checked out the map, and in two of the three games I started in a one territory island w/out any link to any other land mass. That would be a game breaker, IMO, given I was a completely non-water nation.

The other time I started in Ireland http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Yeah, that's a pain. We used to have a problem with this, and with a few players in the game, we used to end up declaring 3 or 4 mulligans before everyone had a start position that didn't suck.

The problem seems to have subsided with the innovative solution of flagging some of the really crappy starting positions nostart. That shouldn't happen anymore as a result.

Game update: The start of the game will have to be delayed an hour to 2000 EST, because the server op won't be back on that day until then and can't start the game until he returns. Once the game has started, however, subsequent days can run at 1900 EST just fine.

The server will be brought up tomorrow for the start of sign-in. Would all participating please declare their national pick at this time?

I'll be playing Ermor. As usual.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Maybe. But I think that the moment, the obstacle to sign-ins is more the fact that the abstainers don't wish to devote a large chunk of uninterrupted time on a daily basis.

Also, while we might get more people to sign in if we pushed the game up a day, we might also get more people dropping OUT of the game if it overruns the weekend. I'll keep that under consideration for next game, though.

Norfleet March 12th, 2004 09:19 PM

Re: The New Game: The Revenge

Rare. The World map is enormously huge enough that even on rare events, you're probably going to get your full quota of 3 events a round. I always have, even on an Order-3 race, randoms rare race.

What rare *DOES* reduce is the possibility that your temple/lab/home province BURNS TO THE GROUND inside of the first 3 turns of the game, leaving you totally jacked. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

And hey, either way works out in *MY* favor. I'm luck 3, and I'm going to burn down all my provinces anyway. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Not really. Mostly because I am devoid of IRC, because being on IRC has always filled me with an urge to do severe bodily harm to the others on the channel. I think I might have been on the wrong channels, though. Either way, I lack an IRC client. Does anyone have a Linux IRC client that is not too much work to set up and directions how to operate it?

Messenger, on the other hand, I consider to be beneath my dignity to touch. If I absolutely MUST contact somebody who's only point of contact is through IM, I dispatch a minion (aka. "flunky" or "*****"), to deliver my message.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Never heard of it. I use Windoze for games only. Since Windoze will be occupied with the important task of playing Dominions II, where I, as Ermor, struggle valiantly not to be overly late despite the massive amount of pencils that much be pushed, a task I manage to pull off amazingly well, ALT-TABBING constantly is not an option. And my screen is too small to play in Windowed mode without looking like crap. I could get a bigger monitor, but do you have any idea how long it takes to order a custom-built bulletproof monitor? Plus then I wouldn't have enough space on my desk to put other monitors.
