I would like to see a PbEM that makes the best use of being PbEM.

If a game is hosted off of my machine, and hosted once a day, then many things can be done differently. I wont care how long it takes to host. So I also wont care (or actually be thrilled) at how large the map is, how many units, how many players, and how many extreme randoms. Also how long the AI thinks when doing its turn.

The client can be graphical and run on windows or mac or whatever. But Id like the host to be able to run on linux, in text mode, with command-line switches. I would also like it to output game logs, scoreboards, graphs, etc in either text or png formats. That way the games can be easily interfaced to web sites.

The developer doesnt have to create a game that large. But if they created a game engine that was solid, and then allowed players to add to it then it would get that large. Support text files and png graphics for adding races, AI's, events, random scenery elements, etc.

So far the closest Ive seen were Dominions and Space Empires.

I recently had the urge to play a game of Magic Realm, and I've also been visiting http://www.boardgamegeek.com to see what others have said about the games I'm playing. That is where I discovered that there is a Java applet called RealmSpeak which just released v0.34 three days ago. I haven't tried the applet, but BoardGameGeek also has a PDF of the unofficial Third Edition rules (v3.1), which I have downloaded.

EFS remake, YES!

Car Wars on a computer, YES!

Ogre/GEV on the PC, YES YES YES!

The problem with the latter two is that Steve Jackson has thus far refused to license his work for development of a computer game.

I really, really admire SJ, but he's got a major stick up his butt on this point http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Once bitten, twice shy. He's been burned by computer companies before. Fallout is the one I remember, but ISTR there were others.

Pffft, that's like saying, "A girl broke my heart once, so now I'm going to become a priest."

Oh, and I still play EFS occasionally.

Then again, I still bust out Lords of Magic from time to time, as well http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
